Have you ever noticed how people will ask you some of the weirdest questions? From time to time, I wear glasses, and people will ask me, “do you wear glasses because of the way they look?” “No, I wear glasses because I like the way you look. I can’t see without them. Some questions I don’t mind but there are some that just drive me CrAzY. Two questions I can’t stand being asked: (1) “if you could live anywhere you wanted to, where would it be?” and (2) “if you could do anything you wanted, what would you do?” First of all, I can live wherever I want to, and I am living there. I can do whatever I want, and I’m doing exactly what I want to do. In their questions, I find an element of randomness to life. Almost like we have no control over the life that we live. Nothing could be further from the truth. I admit that there are things that come our way in life that we can’t control. We don’t always control or know the how, when, and where but the one thing we do control is the why! I am in control of why I get up each morning!
For many people life is a bore, there is no future, no meaning, or purpose. They feel as though life has passed them by. Others are missing out on the life they we’re intended to live because they’re living someone else’s life. Someone else has determined for them where they should go to school, where they should live, what profession they should enter, and in some instances who they should marry. Maybe you’re not living someone else’s life, but you’re allowing life to happen to you because; well, you just don’t know what life to live. Too many times we sit back and allow life to happen to us; instead of making life happen.
In the beginning of the movie Forest Gump, there’s a scene where a feather is blowing in the wind and it ends up at the feet of Forest. To me, that feather represents so many of us when we don’t chase down the purpose that has been placed on our life. We don’t know what life to live and so we just live life aimlessly, and we end up wherever the wind takes us.
Don’t be a feather in the wind, take ownership of your life. Your future is not in front of you, it’s within you. Make life happen. Maybe it’s time to fill out the application, make the call, pack the UHAUL, write the check, have the conversation, or say yes. I don’t know what it is, but I do know that if you don’t do something NOTHING will happen. Take initiative. God wants to write His story through your life, and that can’t happen if you’re living without intention.
